The Columbia Association Board on November 12 decided not to move forward with plans to replace the former bell tower at Lake Kittamaqundi. They discussed replacing it on the dock or across the lake, all in time for Columbia’s 50th birthday in 2017. However, citing costs and uncertainty about redevelopment in the area, they decided that it was not prudent to proceed.
For those nostalgic for the bells as part of the birthday, Dennis Mattey, CA’s Director of Open Space and Facilities Services suggested that the bells could be put on display temporarily in the gazebo near Clyde’s. However, I thought why not put the bells at Whole Foods? This area is close to the old dock location. They could be placed on the patio or roof areas. For that matter, they could even be made permanent. A wooden bell tower would compliment the architecture of the Frank Gehry designed building.
So what do you think Whole Foods? Want to help out here for the 50th birthday?
For whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
